With older धोवना (dhovnā), inherited from Prakrit धोअइ (dhoaï), धोवइ (dhovaï), from Sanskrit धावति (dhāvati, runs, flows, washes) with influence from the Prakrit past participle धोअ (dhoa, washed) < Sanskrit धौत (dhautá). Cognate with Marathi धुणे (dhuṇe), Nepali धुनु (dhunu), Bengali ধোয়া (dhōẇa), Assamese ধোৱা (dhüa). Doublet of धाना (dhānā) and धावना (dhāvnā, to run), both now obsolete.
