From Proto-Indo-European *yówg-yo-s (draught animal, fit for yoking), from *yewg- (to yoke). See योग (yoga) and युज् (yuj) for more; outside of Indic, cognate with Proto-Germanic *jaukiją (draught animal) (whence Old Norse eykr).
