Inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑀁𑀮𑀕𑁆𑀕 (saṃlagga, joined, touching) +‎ -ना (-nā, verbal suffix), from Sanskrit संलग्न (saṃlagna, attached together), ultimately from the root लग् (lag, to be in contact). Compare Nepali सल्कनु (salkanu), Punjabi ਸੁਲਗਣਾ (sulgaṇā), Old Awadhi सुलगइ (sulagaï), Gujarati સળગવું (saḷgavũ), Marathi शिलकणें (śilakṇẽ) / शिलगणें (śilagṇẽ). Doublet of सलग (salag).
