From Proto-Tai *χiːŋᴬ ‎(ginger). Cognate with Lao ຂີງ ‎(khīng), Shan ၶိင် ‎(kʰiŋ1), Zhuang hing ‎(ginger). Compare Proto-Vietic *s-gəːŋ ~ s-kəːŋ ‎(ginger) (Vietnamese gừng) and Proto-Sino-Tibetan *kjaŋ ‎(ginger) (Chinese (OC *kaŋ, “ginger”), Burmese ချင်း ‎(hkyang:)).
