Etymology edit

From Sanskrit प्रवेणी (praveṇī, braid of hair worn by widows or by wives in the absence of their husbands); probably via Old Khmer °praveṇī, pravaiṇi, pravaini (tradition, custom; succession, lineage). Cognate with Modern Khmer ប្រពៃណី (prɑpɨynii), Lao ປະເພນີ (pa phē nī). Compare Pali paveṇi, from which Thai ปเวณี is derived. Doublet of ประเวณี (bprà-wee-nii).
