From ส่ง (sòng, “to send; to pass”) + ไม้ (máai, “stick”) + ต่อ (dtɔ̀ɔ, “in succession; next; on”); literally "to pass a stick on"; originating from the practice of a relay race in which runners take turn in running by passing a baton to each other.
