From Sanskrit बोधिसत्त्व (bodhisattva, “bodhisattva”, literally “enlightened being”), from बोधि (bodhi, “enlightened; enlightened intellect”) + सत्त्व (sattva, “being; creature”); possibly via Old Khmer bodhisatva (“idem”); equivalent to Thai โพธิ + สัตว์ (sàt). Cognate with Modern Khmer ពោធិសត្វ (poothisat); Lao ໂພທິສັດ (phō thi sat).
