Etymology

From Old Georgian ცხოვარი (cxovari), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *c₁xwar-, from Proto-Georgian-Zan *c₁xow- (whence also ცხოვრება (cxovreba), ცხოველი (cxoveli), სიცოცხლე (sicocxle), etc.). Cognate with Mingrelian შხური (šxuri) and Laz ჩხური (çxuri). Old Armenian ոչխար (očʻxar) is a Zan borrowing. Doublet of ოჩხარი (očxari), borrowed from Armenian.
