Etymology

From Old Georgian ცხოველი (cxoveli), ცხოელი (cxoeli), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *c₁xow-el-, from *c₁xow- (whence also Georgian ცხვარი (cxvari), Georgian ცხოვრება (cxovreba)). Cognate with Mingrelian ჩხოუ (čxou, cow) and Laz მჩხური (mçxuri, sheep); see below for more.
