  1. a settlement, a concession, a place of residence for foreigners
    In Japanese history, this term was used for the Dutch concession in Nagasaki, for example. The legal constriction of only allowing foreigners to reside in official kyoryūchi was abolished in 1899.
  2. a reservation (tract of land), as for Native Americans
