Etymology

edit

From an aphaeretic form of Sanskrit करालक (karālaka), कराल (karāla, a kind of Ocimum).

Qimin Yaoshu in the sixth century records that this name (羅勒) was tabooed during the time of emperor Shi Le (石勒, 273–333), on account of the identity of the second character with that in his own name, and the name was changed into 蘭香 instead. Such taboo appears to be short-lived, as the name 羅勒 was attested again in the work of Tao Hongjing (456–536).
