Compound of (あい) (ai, indigo color) + () (some, (れん)(よう)(けい) (ren'yōkei, stem or continuative form) of the verb ()める (someru, to dye).). The some changes to zome as an instance of rendaku (連濁).

First attested in 927.[1]
