From Proto-Iranian (compare Pashto سل(səl), Persian صد(sad), Kurdish sed), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćata (compare Sanskrit शत(śatá)), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱm̥tóm. Other cognates include Ancient Greek ἑκατόν(hekatón), Latin centum, Tocharian A känt, Lithuanian šimtas, and Old Church Slavonic съто(sŭto).
