From Proto-Iranian (compare Pashto سل ‎(səl), Persian صد ‎(sad), Kurdish sed), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ćata (compare Sanskrit शत ‎(śatá)), from Proto-Indo-European *ḱm̥tóm. Other cognates include Ancient Greek ἑκατόν ‎(hekatón), Latin centum, Tocharian A känt, Lithuanian šimtas, and Old Church Slavonic съто ‎(sŭto).
