From Middle High German kitel. Further origin uncertain; sometimes derived from Arabic قُطْن (quṭn, “cotton”), but this is doubtful. Cognate with Yiddish קיטל (kitl), Luxembourgish Kiddel, Middle Dutch kedel (modern kiel), Middle Low German kēdel.
