editUncertain, but undoubtedly related to Middle Low German lāke (“brine, pickling solution", also "pool, puddle”), from Old Saxon laca (“pool, pond, stream, ditch”), from Proto-West Germanic *laku (“pool, stream”). Perhaps from a fusion of the aforementioned (or its cognate Old Frisian *lake) and Old Frisian *lage (“sea”), from Proto-West Germanic *lagu (“sea”).
