editFrom Proto-Balto-Slavic *strájas, from Proto-Indo-European *stroyos, from *sterh₃- (“to spread, stretch out”). Cognate with Latvian strãjа (“straw-lined stall”), Latin striа (“furrow, fold”), striātus (“folded”).
