• IPA(key): /ɡbk ˈipa/, [ɡbk ˈi.pa]

This template uses Module:cbk-pronunc to convert Chavacano spelling to pronunciation.

Usage edit

Parameters edit

Normally, call this template with no parameters, and it will automatically generate the pronunciation for the page name.

NOTE: The invocation of {{cbk-IPA}} should occur on a line by itself. Do not put a bullet mark (*) before it. The bullet mark is generated by the template.

|1=
Phonetic respelling of word or phrase. Needed for words where accent is different from Chavacano stress rules (which follows Spanish rules) or has glottal stops (such as loanwords from Philippine languages such as Hiligaynon, Tagalog or Cebuano).
|bullets=
Number of bullet marks to place before the generated pronunciation. Defaults to 1.
|pre=
Text to place before the generated pronunciation.
|post=
Text to place after the generated pronunciation.

Compared to the Spanish IPA template, this only generates seseolleísmo style pronunciation used by Chavacano speakers. Other key differences:

  • The phonetic transcription coalesces /j/ after /d/, /s/ and /t/, which occurs in Chavacano. In Spanish, the cluster is kept.
  • Spanish /f/ and /p/ are both pronounced /p/ in Chavacano.
  • /b/, /d/ and /g/ are not affricated at the phonetic transcription unlike with Spanish.

Examples edit

Accent other than default edit

G and GU before E and I edit

GE or GI in loanwords not written in Spanish-based orthography need to be respelled to provide desired pronunciation:

Silent H edit

In most Chavacano words, the H is silent and is automatically stripped.

Audible H in loanwords edit

In loanwords, H is usually pronounced, but should be transcribed to Chavacano J.

LL to /ʎ/ edit

NG in loanwords from Philippine languages and English edit

NG in loanwords from Philippine languages and English need to be respelled to ÑG if pronounced /ŋ/ and not as the consonant cluster /ng/.

/j/-coalescence after /d/, /s/ and /t/ edit

Glottal stops edit

Nasal assimilation edit

Obstruent assimilation edit

Multiword expressions edit

This template can also handle multiword expressions, or even sentences.
