Welcome Message edit

Welcome edit

Hello, welcome to Wiktionary, and thank you for your contributions so far.

If you are unfamiliar with wiki-editing, take a look at Help:How to edit a page. It is a concise list of technical guidelines to the wiki format we use here: how to, for example, make text boldfaced or create hyperlinks. Feel free to practice in the sandbox. If you would like a slower introduction we have a short tutorial.

These links may help you familiarize yourself with Wiktionary:

  • Entry layout (EL) is a detailed policy on Wiktionary's page formatting; all entries must conform to it. The easiest way to start off is to copy the contents of an existing same-language entry, and then adapt it to fit the entry you are creating.
  • Check out Language considerations to find out more about how to edit for a particular language.
  • Our Criteria for Inclusion (CFI) defines exactly which words can be added to Wiktionary; the most important part is that Wiktionary only accepts words that have been in somewhat widespread use over the course of at least a year, and citations that demonstrate usage can be asked for when there is doubt.
  • If you already have some experience with editing our sister project Wikipedia, then you may find our guide for Wikipedia users useful.
  • If you have any questions, bring them to Wiktionary:Information desk or ask me on my talk page.
  • Whenever commenting on any discussion page, please sign your posts with four tildes (~~~~) which automatically produces your username and timestamp.
  • You are encouraged to add a BabelBox to your userpage to indicate your self-assessed knowledge of languages.

Enjoy your stay at Wiktionary! -- Apisite (talk) 10:27, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Thanks so much. I'll read the welcome pages and try not to annoy. JJ72 Bassist (talk) 10:28, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
Consider starting with adding a Babel-Box to your user-page. --Apisite (talk) 21:48, 11 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
What is a Babel-Box? JJ72 Bassist (talk) 12:21, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
It's an information box on a user's home page providing information on which languages the user speaks and how fluently they speak them. If you click on the blue link in the welcome message (which takes you to Wiktionary:Babel) you'll be directed to a page explaining things in more detail. It's not obligatory to have one but we're a nosy lot! --Overlordnat1 (talk) 14:24, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
I see. Maybe I'll add it when I seek out adminship JJ72 Bassist (talk) 19:27, 12 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

Admin? edit

Love your work. Ready for the vote? Equinox 23:21, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply

I'm flattered by your valentine offer. I actually really love your work too, and may be so bold as to say I love YOU, the human behind the username. As for the vote, I'll need to weigh it up as there has been a spate of unsuccessful, even suicidal, admin votes recently. On the one hand, I have only been here a few days, and haven't had much interaction with the users yet. Plus, I don't understand modules and make loads of tyops. On the other hand, I am familiar with the whole site already, edit comfortably in 4 languages, have no allergies to spending a ridiculously huge chunk of my life as an amateur lexico, and above all, I have absolutely no track record of abusing wikis, no siree.... All in all, I shall decline the offer, but ask me in a couple of years anyway. JJ72 Bassist (talk) 23:33, 14 February 2023 (UTC)Reply
