Idk how much wiktionary is trying to be machine-traversable, but, if it is, in general it's worse to have m tags because they are ambiguous as to whether they're related to the page's word. So "from Latin ex- and lūcidus (clear)" is unfortunate. Is prefix acceptable even if the language isn't the page's word's language? I.e. when it represents both a derivation and a decomposition into prefix and stem? I.e., could we instead write "from ex- +‎ lūcidus (clear)"? Regarding your question in bullet diff edit

Hey and thank you for contributing to Wiktionary!

Re: "I'm not sure whether to put der or bor or inh. Is it better not to edit until I know that it's specifically not borrowed or inherited, or is der a strict improvement over etyl?" General consensus is that {{etyl}} should not be mass-replaced with {{der}}. See for instance this discussion: Wiktionary:Beer_parlour/2021/September#User:Donnanz’s_etyl_clean-up_methods

To give you a quick overview:

  • {{inh}} is used when a word comes from an ancestor language with usage never having stopped entirely: house inherits from Middle English hous and further from Old English hūs. Use {{inh}} for as long as the inheritance chain continues. Be aware that grammatical alterations at an earlier stage stop the inh chain.
  • {{bor}} is used when a term is borrowed directly into the language from another language: schadenfreude borrowed from German Schadenfreude.
  • {{der}} is used when the borrowing happened at an earlier stage down the etymology chain: singular first inherited from Middle English singuler, which in turn borrowed from Old French.

This covers the basics. There are also {{ubor}}, {{lbor}}, {{slbor}}, {{sl}}, {{calque}}, {{pcal}}, ... which you can read more about on the corresponding pages. When you're on their pages, you can also click "What links here" on the left-hand side to see some article making use of them if you want to see some examples.
