@DTLHS: I don't log in here very often, so I just saw this note of yours. As you can see, it's rather baffling: first because you typoed "diff" as "dif", and second because you've given no reason—what was improper about those edits?

And as the history shows, User:-sche (whom I have just thanked) took the trouble to look at my change summary and reinstate my anchors, though moving them out of the headers. Thnidu (talk) 15:54, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

Sorry for the typo. HTML elements like span should not be applied in an ad-hoc manner to entries- this will just lead to inconsistencies when the Wiktionary page changes. Templates are vastly preferred. HTML should not be in the wikitext at all. DTLHS (talk) 16:01, 7 September 2014 (UTC)

@DTLHS: What template do you suggest? I'm not going to use anchor in its current condition, which it's been in for five years. See my request in the Grease Pit. IDs for definitions

User:Ungoliant MMDCCLXIV : So sorry, sensei, but senseid doesn't work from Wikipedia. I need a link that'll work from Wikipedia, from this:

The link from Wikipedia needs to include language name, so if you add {{senseid|en|example}} to a definition, the anchor will be #English-example — Ungoliant ^(falai) 11:50, 18 May 2017 (UTC)

It is not documented anywhere AFAIK, but we can fix that if you think it is necessary. The way I found out was probably by hovering over the links created by {{m|en|word|id=idhere}} and the like (example). — Ungoliant ^(falai) 11:58, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

Ungoliant Oh yes, please do! If this is to be "the dictionary anyone can edit", then the tools must be available to anyone who wants them. Otherwise, effective and efficient editing will remain in the hands of a small cadre that grows only slowly, as n00bs happen to catch the attention of members able and willing to tell them where the bathroom is, so to speak-- as you have kindly done for me. Oral tradition and telepathy are no way to run a project!

P.S. I was looking for something like WP's w: template: outdent, but I couldn't find anything, so I just did it crudely. See W:Talk:Möbius_resistor#why-outdented. --Thnidu (talk) 23:50, 19 May 2017 (UTC)

URL to senseid misbehaves

User:Ungoliant MMDCCLXIV: I just tried to use {{senseid}} to anchor a link from Wikipedia. First I tried the URL that came up

https://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/factor#English-contributing_element

When I put that URL into my browser (Firefox 54.0 (64-bit),* running on macOS Sierra v.10.12.5), first it went to the right page and the right part of the page, with the definition highlighted in light blue. But then it immediately jumped to the last line of the definitions: the example in def#8,

(Can we find and add a quotation of Sir Walter Scott to this entry?)



was the top line in the viewing page. (I'd use a screenshot, but it's such a pain to upload any graphic.) I was able to scroll up to the highlighted region, but that would be tough on somebody who hadn't already seen the page. The same happened from Wikipedia (in w:Pīti), when I converted the URL to a wikilink as

[[wikt:factor#English-contributing_element |factor]]

* Firefox just told me to upgrade to v54.0.1 (64-bit), so I did. No different in this respect.

What must be happening is that even after it takes you to the highlighted definition, your browser run more javascript that alter the page’s width. It happens to me sometimes. I honestly don’t know how to fix it. — Ungoliant ^(falai) 04:08, 30 June 2017 (UTC)
