   Mais si peu de poètes s’y essaient, beaucoup d’entre ceux qui s’efforcent malgré tout d’en perpétuer la tradition passent à la postérité.

   But although few poets try their hand at it, many of those who despite everything still endeavour to perpetuate the tradition end up going down in history.

   Si aucun d’entre eux ne recueille la majorité absolue, un second décompte est mis en œuvre pour départager les deux candidats arrivés en tête.

   If none of them obtain an absolute majority, there is a second count to decide between the two candidates who received the most votes.

Usage notes

• Marks a relation between a whole and one or more of its constituent elements, that is, for example an individual member of a group or a few individuals of a group.

• D'entre may optionally be replaced by de after un (including l’un and pas un), aucun, chacun, qui, and sometimes la plupart. Otherwise, d'entre must be used.
  • (l’)un d’eux / (l’)un d’entre eux ― one of them
  • chacun de nous / chacun d’entre nous ― every one of us
  • plusieurs d’entre vous ― several of you
  • quelques-uns d’entre nous ― a few of us
  • un bon nombre d’entre eux ― a good number of them
