From Proto-West Germanic *aglijan, from Proto-Germanic *aglijaną (to trouble, vex), from Proto-Germanic *agluz (troublesome, painful, loathsome), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʰ-lo-, from Proto-Indo-European *h₂egʰ- (to be afraid, be depressed). Akin to Gothic 𐌰𐌲𐌻𐌾𐌰𐌽 (agljan), Middle Low German egelen (to annoy), Old English eġle, Gothic 𐌰𐌲𐌻𐍃 (agls, shameful).
