From Middle Dutch gewis, gewes (certain, sure), from Old Dutch *gewis (certain, sure) and gewisso (certainly, surely), both from Proto-Germanic *gawissaz (known, sure), from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (to know).

Cognate with English wis (certain, sure), German gewiss (certain), Danish vis (sure).
