From Middle Dutch gewis, gewes (“certain, sure”), from Old Dutch *gewis (“certain, sure”) and gewisso (“certainly, surely”), both from Proto-Germanic *gawissaz (“known, sure”), from Proto-Indo-European *weyd- (“to know”).
Cognate with English wis (“certain, sure”), German gewiss (“certain”), Danish vis (“sure”).
