hədd
Azerbaijani
editEtymology
editBorrowed from Arabic حَدّ (ḥadd).
Noun
edithədd (definite accusative həddi, sound plural hədlər, broken plural hüdud)
- border, borderline, frontier
- son hədd ― last frontier
- limit
- yaş həddi ― age limit
- (figurative) boundary (the bounds, confines, or limits between immaterial things)
- həddini aşmaq ― overstep the bounds
- (mathematics) term
- (figuratively) edge, threshold, brink
- ölüm həddində ― on the brink of death
Usage notes
editThe final double consonant in Azerbaijani nouns is usually reduced in the locative and ablative singular and plural; hiss and küll are exceptions to this rule, as they would otherwise be confused with his and kül (“Azərbaycan dilində hansı sözlərin yazılışının dəyişəcəyi açıqlanıb”, in Report.az[1], 2018 January).
