Suggested to derive from Latin in hoc (“in this (place)”), in contrast with other modern Romance derivations from Vulgar Latin *eccum hīc (Italian qui, Spanish aquí, etc.), *eccum hāc (Italian qua, Spanish acá, etc.), and attested Latin ecce hīc (French ci, Catalan ací, Piedmontese si, zi, etc.).
