From Malay kentang, from Classical Malay kentang, from Javanese ꦏꦼꦤ꧀ꦛꦁ (kenthang, tuber), probably from Proto-Mon-Khmer *t₁aŋ (joint, jointed stem).

  • Semantic loan from English potato (underpowered; low-end, literally potato) for "an underpowered, low-end computing device".
