Prefix

edit

mang-

  1. 3rd actor trigger verb prefix
    1. to practice the action of the root
      mang- + ‎anak (child) → ‎manganak (to give birth)
      mang- + ‎sali (buying) → ‎manyali (to go shopping)
  2. (with root reduplication) Forms nouns signifying occupations or doer of the action expressed by the root

Usage notes

edit
  • Along with the prefix pang-, this prefix is affected by initial consonant mutations.
  • The prefix becomes mam- before ⟨b⟩ or ⟨p⟩. Where the root begins with ⟨p⟩, the consonants in question may be deleted.
  • The prefix becomes man- before any vowel (except in some older prefixed verbs, e.g. manganak, from anak, mangaku from aku), ⟨d⟩, ⟨l⟩, ⟨n⟩, ⟨t⟩ and ⟨u⟩/⟨w⟩. Where the root begins with ⟨t⟩, the consonants in question may be deleted.
  • The prefix usually becomes many- before ⟨s⟩ (e.g. manyamba from samba (to worship)), but sometimes man- with deletion of the consonant in some roots, usually loanwords (e.g. manese from sese (to fall)).
  • Where the initial of the root is a /k/, the sound is dropped.
