From Old Galician-Portuguese sẽestro, from Latin sinistrum (left), through a Vulgar Latin *sinextrum, from contamination with dexter (right), whence Portuguese destro. Cognate with Spanish siniestro, Old French senestre, Old Italian sinestro. Compare also the borrowed doublet sinistro.
