Hungarian edit

Etymology edit

tova +‎ -bb

Pronunciation edit

  • IPA(key): [ˈtovaːbː]
  • (file)
  • Hyphenation: to‧vább
  • Rhymes: -aːbː

Adverb edit

tovább (not comparable)

  1. further, farther (in distance)
  2. comparative degree of sokáig (for long): longer (in time)

Usage notes edit

  • When it is used in the temporal sense (“proceeding, going on doing something”), it is an adverb, written in two words: tovább alszik, tovább dolgozik, tovább él, tovább szolgál, tovább tart.
  • When it is used in a spatial sense (“on, further”), it can be a verbal prefix as well. This term may also be part of the split form of a verb prefixed with tovább-, occurring when the main verb does not follow the prefix directly. It can be interpreted only with the related verb form, irrespective of its position in the sentence, e.g. meg tudták volna nézni (they could have seen it, from megnéz). For verbs with this prefix, see tovább-; for an overview, Appendix:Hungarian verbal prefixes.
  • For another adverb that can be a prefix as well, see előre and előre-.
