From Medieval Byzantine Greek (ἐ)ξεγράφω ((e)xegráphō) from the Ancient Greek ἐκγρᾰ́φω (ekgráphō, copy). The sense "strike out" since Hellenistic times. With ξε- (xe-, un-) +‎ γράφω (gráfo, write).

  1. to strike out, erase, rub out (remove from being written)
