Etymology

edit

Of unclear origin, with no exact matches in other Slavic languages. By surface analysis, resembles Proto-Slavic *rǫgati (to rebuke, to scold) (whence Bulgarian ръга́я (rǎgája)).

Mladenov tentatively links it to Bulgarian рог (rog, horn).
