Old Armenian edit

Etymology edit

From Middle Iranian *pativ. Compare Sogdian [script needed] (ptβy-, respect, honour).

This etymology is missing or incomplete. Please add to it, or discuss it at the Etymology scriptorium.
Particularly: “Further origin is uncertain. The first part is most likely from Proto-Iranian *pati-. The second part is either from *baH (to shine),[1] from Proto-Indo-Iranian *bʰaH- (to shine, be bright), or from *baiH (to fear),[2] of which see Persian بیم (bim, fear) for more.”
