The word Սուրբ(Surb, Holy) abbreviated. Only first and last letters are written.

Punctuation markEdit

՟

  1. Armenian abbreviation mark. It was placed on top of the part of the word to indicate that it was abbreviated. Called պատիվ(pativ) in Armenian.

Usage notesEdit

  • Not used in modern Armenian.
  • The sign should be placed on top of a letter, but most current fonts do not do that: they show it following a letter, e.g. Ած՟(Ac.).
  • The most common abbreviations were:
    Ած՟(Ac.) = Աստուած(Astuac)
    Այ՟(Ay.) = Աստուածոյ(Astuacoy)
    յԱյ՟(yAy.) = յԱստուածոյ(yAstuacoy)
    Ավ՟(Av.) = Աստուածով(Astuacov)
    ամ՟(am.) = ամենայն(amenayn)
    պտ՟(pt.) = պատասխանի(patasxani)
    սբ՟(sb.) = սուրբ(surb)
    -ութի՟(-utʿi.) = -ութիւն(-utʿiwn), -ութե՟(-utʿe.) = -ութեան(-utʿean), -ութէ՟(-utʿē.) = -ութենէ(-utʿenē)
