Etymology edit

Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀯𑀟𑁆𑀠𑀤𑀺 (vaḍḍhadi), from Sanskrit वर्धते (vardhate, to grow, increase). Cognate to Punjabi ਵੱਧਣਾ (vaddhaṇā) / وَدھݨا (vadhṇā), Marathi वाढणे (vāḍhṇe), Assamese বঢ়া (borha).

  2. to grow, become larger (in size)
  3. to rise (e.g. price, temperature)
  4. to develop, advance, progress
  5. to flourish, thrive
  6. (with آگے (āge)) to move ahead, continue
  7. to be extended, stretch out
    ہاتھ بڑھناfor one's hand to be stretched out
