Of uncertain origin. आगार was probably the original form, while अगार was secondary. Has been taken to be from Proto-Indo-European *h₂ger- (to gather); compare ग्राम (grāma, village), Ancient Greek ᾰ̓γορᾱ́ (agorā́, assembly, market)).
