Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀘𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀤𑀺 (cukkadi), from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀘𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀢𑀺 (*cukkati), from the past participle 𑀘𑀼𑀓𑁆𑀓 (cukka, fallen, mistaken, forgotten), phonetically replacing and related to Sanskrit च्युत (cyutá, fallen, missing one's aim), from the root च्यु (cyu). Doublet of चूकना (cūknā).
