Inherited from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀣𑀓𑁆𑀓𑀤𑀺 (thakkadi), perhaps from Ashokan Prakrit *𑀲𑁆𑀣𑀓𑁆𑀓𑁆 (*sthakk, stop, halt), and further perhaps from Sanskrit स्थग् (sthag, to cover, hide); compare Sanskrit स्थगितगिर् (sthagitagir, with speech impeded), from the same root. Cognate with Nepali थाक्नु (thāknu), Maithili थाकब (thākab) / 𑒟𑒰𑒏𑒥 (thākaba), Punjabi ਥਕਣਾ (thakṇā), ਥੱਕਣਾ (thakkaṇā) / تھکݨا (thkṇā), Sindhi ٿَڪَڻُ / थकणु, Gujarati થાકવું (thākvũ), Marathi थकणे (thakṇe), Bengali থাকা (thaka), Assamese থকা (thoka), থাকা (thaka).
