Inherited from Prakrit 𑀨𑀺𑀭𑀇 (phiraï, goes, returns), from an unattested Sanskrit *‍फिरति (‍phirati, moves, wanders, turns). Cognate with Punjabi ਫਿਰਨਾ (phirnā) / پھِرنا (phirnā), Gujarati ફરવું (pharvũ), Marathi फिरणे (phirṇe), Bengali ফেরা (phera).
