From earlier बाजना (bājnā), from Sanskrit वाद्यते (vādyate), the passive form of वादयति (vādayati), from the root वद् (vad, to speak). Compare Nepali बज्नु (bajnu), Gujarati વાગવું (vāgvũ), Marathi वाजणे (vāj̈ṇe), Assamese বাজা (baza).
