Etymology

edit

Inherited from Prakrit *𑀓𑁄𑀓𑁆𑀔 (*kŏkkha), from Sanskrit कौक्ष (kaukṣa, abdominal), vṛddhied derivative of कुक्षि (kukṣi), from Proto-Indo-Aryan *kuṭṣíṣ, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *kućšíš, possibly an old derivation of Proto-Indo-European *kuḱis (belly; vulva); with a semantic shift in sense 4 from "belly" > "womb" > "infant" > "baby, child" (for another similar development, see child).
