From Proto-Tai *beːᴬ (“raft”). Cognate with Northern Thai ᨻᩯ, Khün ᨻᩯ, Lao ແພ (phǣ), Lü ᦶᦗ (pae), Shan ပႄး (páae), Tai Nüa ᥙᥥᥰ (pë), Phake ပေ (pe), Ahom 𑜆𑜦𑜧 (pē), Old Khmer bē (“banana-leaf platter on which offerings are presented”), Modern Khmer ផែ (phae). Compare Middle Chinese 排 (MC beaj), Proto-Hlai *ɓəj (“bamboo raft”).
