From Proto-Lolo-Burmese *k-rip (shadow, shade), from Proto-Tibeto-Burman *g/s-rip (idem) (STEDT: rip "throw a shadow"). Cognate with Tibetan གྲིབ (grib, shade, shadow); Hill (2019) also compares it to Old Chinese (OC *qrɯm, “shade”).
