From Old Georgian საფეთქელი (sapetkeli), from Proto-Kartvelian *petk-, *ptk. Cognates include Laz ოფათქალუ (opatkalu). The meaning alludes to the pulsation, i.e. ფეთქვა (petkva), of the blood vessel at the temple.
