Etymology edit

From Old Georgian სახელი (saxeli), from Proto-Kartvelian *ʒ₁ax-e-, from *ʒ₁ax-, *ʒ₁x-. Cognate with Mingrelian ჯოხო (ǯoxo), Laz ჯოხო (coxo) and Svan ჟახე (žaxe).

From Proto-Kartvelian *ʒ₁ax-e- (name), derived from the verb stem *ʒ₁ax-, *ʒ₁x- (to call, be called). The phonetic shape of this Proto-Kartvelian stem does not leave any doubt of its native Kartvelian origin.
