From Old Georgian ფურცელი (purceli), from Proto-Georgian-Zan *purc₁-el-. Cognate with Mingrelian ფურჩა (purča) and Laz ფურჩა (purça).

From Proto-Georgian-Zan *purc₁-el- (foliage, husk). Klimov considers the latter to be derived from *prc₁-wn- (to peel) (whence also ფრცქვნა (prckvna, to peel, clean)).
