Etymology

edit

From Proto-Mon-Khmer. Cognate with Temne ked (pregnant; to cause, to bring about), Khmu [Cuang] kəːt, Halang kòt (be born, be pregnant).

The sense "east" was probably originally "the place where the sun rises" or "where the sun was born"; compare Thai ตะวันออก (dtà-wan-ɔ̀ɔk, east), Temne kedʔis (east, "birth of the day"), Khasi mih'ngi (east, [where] the sun rises).

The same analogy of "to be birth" can be made for the sense "day of the month during the period of waxing moon".
