From Old Japanese. Cognate with 憎む (nikumu, “to hate”), 難い (-nikui, “difficult [to do]”, verb suffix).

- → Note that the negative connotations have strengthened over time. The older meaning was milder, closer to dislikeable than the modern hateful.
