Korean
editEtymology
editSee the main entry. The vowel change to ㅓ (eo) is irregular; Ko Gwang-mo believes it was potentially influenced by the etymologically unrelated Early Modern suffix 것 (-geot-).[1]
Suffix
edit겄 • (-geot-)
- Southern dialectal form of 겠 (get, “will, intend”).
Usage notes
editTraditionally used in:
- Southern and western Gyeonggi Province, such as Gapyeong, Yongin, and Yeoju
- Most of South Chungcheong Province and the southern parts of North Chungcheong Province
- All of Jeolla Province
- Most of South Gyeongsang Province
In central, northern, and eastern Gyeonggi, most of North Chungcheong, and North Gyeongsang, the standard form is used.
