editFrom an onomatopoeia for burping like English burp itself. This form *bur (or similar) was then associated, possibly at first in a non-diphthongizing dialect, with the word Bauer (“farmer”, etymology 1 above), partly due to the perception of farmers as unmannered people. See the same in Dutch boer (“farmer; burp”).
