From Serbo-Croatian Pòdgorica / По̀дгорица (literally “under the Gorica”), from pȍd / по̏д (“under”) + Gorica / Горица (“little mountain”), the name of a hill which overlooks the city, from gòra / го̀ра (“mountain”) + -ica / -ица (diminutive suffix).
