From Serbo-Croatian Pòdgorica / По̀дгорица (literally under the Gorica), from pȍd / по̏д (under) + Gorica / Горица (little mountain), the name of a hill which overlooks the city, from gòra / го̀ра (mountain) + -ica / -ица (diminutive suffix).
